23/Secrets & Lies

I'm severely allergic to potatoes. I can't even be in the room if someone's peeling them. Potatoes contain solanine, a toxin present in such tiny amounts (larger amounts if the potato is green) that it doesn't bother most people. It's also in other nightshades and more. I rarely reveal the potato allergy. It seems so un-American.

  1. Although it would be far more un-American to admit to an apple pie allergy.

  2. Yeah, there's that. But I grew up in an Irish neighborhood, so American and Irish are sort of synonymous to me.

  3. It seems un-Kiwi too. Or at least, un-1960s-70s Kiwi. I grew up in a farming household (yes, of Irish potato famine stock), and we ate potatoes daily. I rarely cook them now. You'd be safe at my house.

Does that mean you can't eat tomatoes either?

  4. Yes, and tomatoes are what I miss most. I miss them more than cake and pie and ice cream and eggplant and peppers, and I miss them even more than artichokes. I miss eating them, and I miss growing them . . . all those delicious varieties.

I tried eating spaghetti with kidney bean sauce a few years ago—the sauce made with cooked tomatoes—and I won't try that experiment again. I woke up in the middle of the night with every joint on fire.
