9/ The Voices

For quite a long time in my forties when I approached the hypnagogic state before sleep I would deliberately listen hard. Really strain to listen. And then I would hear them: Phrases, sentences, uttered in different voices and emotions. At first I thought they must be replays of conversations I’d unconsciously overheard during the day. But they were something else.

  1. I can't say for certain what they are, but I think they're thoughts. It's possible that thought-statements, especially those powered by strong emotion, are "out there" to be picked up by good receivers. Or maybe they were spoken statements that, once uttered, end up out there too. I do know researchers in Norway were startled some years ago to discover that many normal, even average, people hear voices. I no longer induce this nighttime phenomenon after seeing something frightening in that hypnagogic state.

  2. I love the idea. I've tried similar things, but Paul always starts snoring before I get there. (Serious here.)
