I was 32 and pregnant with my second child. Up the road, Vera was 46, had seven children and some grandchildren. Watching me pull weeds, she'd say, "Susan, you should eat those." But I couldn't imagine it. At age 89, she told me she had zero aches and pains. I should have eaten those weeds.
I'm laughing. I need those weeds already. You might like this too - https://aseparatelife.wordpress.com/2012/07/12/foraging-for-food-3/
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link! Yes, Lambs quarters was one of Vera's edible weeds. I'd forgotten that. Purslane was another. And of course dandelions. There was at least one more that I can't remember.
DeleteStinging nettles?
DeleteNot stinging nettles (man, I have been seriously stung!), but my cousin makes tea out of it. I wouldn't dare.
DeleteI'd like to cook with nettles. My daughter makes soup and pesto out of it. It's too late in the season now, I hear.
DeleteThey're not good when they're mature? Where I live, they're just starting to appear. In any case, my mission is to eradicate them. I've been stung too many times, and the pain lingers for a while. Poison ivy eradication is another never-ending mission.
DeleteI once made dandelion greens but since I hate greens as a whole, found them revolting. My daughter cooks with weeds a lot, including dandelion greens (and tops for wine).
ReplyDeleteYour daughter is adventurous! We certainly have a lot of dandelion greens. Maybe I should try juicing them. Or not.
