Twenties: A New Yorker knows what to do. The cocktail hour should be observed. Scotch or martinis de rigueur at lunch . . . Pimm's Cup in Bermuda . . . Lillet at Lincoln Center. Stocking up on liqueurs at duty-free airport shops. Bloody Marys at brunch and on airplanes. In my twenties I also discovered how easily I got sick hangovers.

Even at our weekend house, the cocktail hour was observed.
