11/ Spices

My spice shelf got an exciting upgrade last year when I discovered Penzeys. I resisted at first, thinking they were too expensive, but when I did the math and factored in the terrific sales, I was converted. I love their unique spice blends and charming boxes—several of which I gave as gifts last Christmas.

  1. My spices need a renewal this year. I used to order from Whole Spice in Napa (really good spices, iffy herbs), and I just looked over World Spice in Seattle. Now I'll have to check Penzey's out as well. Trying to balance the cost with the joy of fresh spices!

    1. Penzeys really does have great sales. I've been deleting their emails w/o reading because I don't need anything and don't want to be seduced by offers of free shipping, etc.

  2. Oh, I think I should avoid their website... I love spices and feel like I could easily be seduced into parting with lots of $$$$.

    1. I was about to suggest you sign up for their emails so you can pounce on one of their sales, but they can be seductive too.

  3. Ah, the continuing battle of organising the spices! I do love spices though - I make my own Ras el Hanout (when I can be bothered) with 13 different spices.

    1. Ha! I wanted to include Ras el Hanout in this post, but didn't have enough room. So I thought about creating its own post, but this saves me the trouble. Penzeys doesn't carry it. I make it myself too, and gave three pretty jars of it as gifts last year.

  4. Hey, I was going to write about Penezys! I think I still will... I have a long history with them.

Regarding Ras el Hanout and Penzeys -- I asked them about it and they gave me a recipe (which I have somewhere...)

  5. You should read their emails, though Susan. Although Bill would be "preaching to the chorus" in your case, he has a lot to say about the current administration. He has lost a lot of customers because of it, but also gained many.

    1. Yes, I've read enough of their emails to know their position on the administration. Also, some FB friends have posted some of Penzeys' messages on the subject. I'm glad to hear speaking out hasn't hurt their business overall.

PS: We shouldn't be concerned about duplicating post ideas. It's nice that our thoughts sometimes overlap.
